This is one of four amaryllis bulbs that I have coming along now. This particular one, called ‘Gervais’ has three stalks of flowers. You can’t beat these huge bulbs for indoor blooms (& yes, I know some folks can grow them in gardens. I can’t).
I did find these at my grocery store, however, and once they have finished blooming I will be able to plant them in my garden. In the meantime, I will enjoy them inside.
Amaryllis are overrated in the garden. They really look better in the home where you can see them up close. They are rather garish, but can look cheapened in the garden.
Interesting, your use of the word garish–I have never thought of them quite like that. This one certainly qualifies but some of the smaller, Peruvian ones would be practically understated by comparison then.
You might be surprised to know my favorite ones are the whites, or a true deep burgundy. Not that typical red that’s usually sold.
But considering that I am waking up to another foot of snow today, I will take all the color I can get right now.
