I mentioned last week that our weather was very finicky this time of year. That makes it really tough to grow certain things like magnolias and the old-fashioned hydrangeas that bloomed on old wood here.
At least twice in the last five years the magnolias have bloomed and then been killed by a late freeze. This year it was even worse. The late freeze was accompanied by heavy wet snow.
So I had lovely blooms, as you saw above, and here, in close-up.
And then they wound up like this!
I suppose I am luckier than many gardeners. I do not have one of those warm micro-climates so not very much was in bloom in my yard. Many people had tulips, daffodils, hyacinths & lots of flowering shrubs already in bloom. That’s just heart breaking when you wait all year to see them bloom.
Oh well–there’s always next year!
